William Heath Robinson was a prolific cartoonist and illustrator, working between 1897 and his death in 1944. HIs most famous works are his drawings of whimsical contraptions to achieve simple tasks. This coined the phase "A Heath Robinson contraption" for any solution that was over complicated.
During WW2, one of the analysis machines at Bletchley Park was named 'Heath Robinson'.
His illustrations are still relevant today as can be seen by the below, which has resonance with the COVID pandemic.
