Publication of the day

Punch was a weekly periodical of humour and satire that was first published in 1841, before finally ceasing publication in 1992. The periodical was also subtitled as 'The London Charivari'. This was in homage to their French equivalent, 'Le Charivari'.

Punch gradually gained popularity, launching the careers of many now well known illustrators and writers. Punch was renowned for its clever satirical illustrations to support its more serious news and commentary articles. Punch was politically 'Conservative'.

Punch was briefly resurrected between 1996 and 2002 by Mohammed Al-Fayed. This was more as medium to retaliate against 'Private Eye' (a competitor), which Al-Fayed believed was grossly critical of him.
