Gandhi and Mr Montague
This is an original 1922 illustration from 'Punch' magazine by Leonard Raven-Hill titled "The Responsibilities".
The print is in excellent condition considering its age.
The print is 22 x 29 cm (approx 9 x 11 inches or c.A4) in size.
The illustration was released just prior to the 'Sedation' trial of Mahatma Gandhi in March 1922. As Secretary of State for India between 1917 and 1922, Montagu represented the interests of the British Empire and opposed the most strident Indian nationalists. Gandhi had been accused of causing 'disaffection against the colonial government' (sedation) under the Indian Penal Code. At the court trial Ghandi pleaded guilty. Montague resigned as Secretary of State for India the following day.
